Motor Vehicle Showroom - Wodonga

This is part of an Advanced Architectural Project Administration course I am currently engaged in at the Wodonga College of Technical and Further Education. The project currently under way is to design & develop an urban concept for part of the new precinct that would be feasable with the removal of the rail line & station that currently run through the center of town.

Sk01wodmotorvehicleshow

This image is one that I have created for the corner site at the junction of South Street & High Street, Wodonga. The image was drawn in AutoCAD for Architecture 2008 & then sketched in Autodesk Impressions. It will be developed further by tidying the steel beam fascia treatment. These UPB (uniform profile beams) will have the flanges closed with translucent material to form lighting channels.  I need to get a colour scheme up & running to create some eye catching visual effects for the continuing progress of the image. Any comments or suggestions are very welcome & can be added at the bottom of this post. If yourcolours are used I will then have to note your input at the bottom of the document as having made contributions to my assignment.

Energy Conscious Building

Tackling Climate Change

by Kevin Matthews

"Just about a year ago, Al Gore rocked the national AIA (American Building Designers Association) Convention in

San Antonio

with a climactic final keynote address, and received a prolonged standing ovation from thousands of building design professionals who had lined up for hours to get in. Gore expressed the compelling case on global climate change, anchoring the powerful presentation with this silver spur to action for design professionals:

Never before in the history of our species has the opportunity and responsibility to decisively affect the continuation of life as we know it lain in the hands of a single profession, as it does today with the Building Design profession.

The case for such drama is pretty simple. Around a third of the world's greenhouse gas emissions currently come from the production, operation, and occupancy of the world's buildings. While much of society affects the location, development, and use of buildings in one way or another, no other professional is as central to these processes as Building Designers.

Building Design is Pivotal

When we also consider the share of local and regional transportation, and the share of natural carbon storage disruption, that are determined as well by the location, production, and use of buildings, then we reach half or more of greenhouse gas emissions as related to buildings.

If that half of our greenhouse gas emissions are not quickly controlled and dramatically reduced, then whatever happens with the other half, humankind will fail in protecting the climate in which we have evolved. Conversely, if the building-related half of emissions are controlled and drastically reduced, then we will be well on our way to a successful response to the crisis we unwittingly initiated."                  To read all of this article go to the following website.

The content of this piece is very compelling as is the movie made by Al Gore a year or so ago. This subject can become a bit of a religion like path for some who tend to want to preach at every dinner table of congregation they ever get to, and then of course there are the non believers & probably lots of normal people in between.

dermot meaney BUILDING DESIGN

As a local building designer I have to work with my clients, their aspirations, budgets, business requirements, amongst a whole host of other constraint's. But the bottom line for everyone is generally the bottom line, how much money the individual or organization has to spend.

I have worked & played (holidayed) on many parts of the globe & really do feel that the part of it that I live in is perhaps one of the best year round climates there are. I have worked outdoors in North America, Europe, Central Australia, Alpine Australia & coastal north/eastern Australia. These climates range between cold -10 & wet, hot +45 & dry to tropical +35 & 98% humidity. Here in the North East it gets to minus 2 occasionally on a winter morning, but that will usually result in glorious clear sunny days, then in the summer we will get a week of temperatures in the high 30's to low 40-41 Celsius. Mid Feb to mid May is usually perfect 10Cl to 35Cl, then mid Sept to mid Dec is the same. (post a reply if you want to know more about our typical weather patterns)

The bottom line with this story is that locally here in South East Australia, the North East region of Victoria, I think we have the easiest climate to reap good results from simple well designed buildings. This reasoning is not rocket science, it is achieved by the simple application of  3 elements of simple physics and of course the practical understanding & application of them. These three elements are the basic principles as to how the planet operates & applying them to our buildings reap very good results in our climate. It works in all climates, but ours is easier & cheaper to work with.

Have you guessed, these three principles are of course Radiation, Convection & Conduction.

We do not have to go to expensive solar, geothermal or whatever systems, simple orientation, shading & material selection will go along way to achieving a step in the right direction. Obviously the more one has traveled down the environmentally religious path, along with the amount of budget one has on hand, I think one should embrace more technology & design to help the cause. There is no doubt the planet does need our action.

This building was designed & built by us for us to a minimum 6 star standard 10 years ago. www.9cindycourt.com it is wonderful to live in at both ends of the year, warm & cosy in the winter, cool & airy in the summer.

Spillernepanorama

This building was designed by me & built by me for a client to well beyond todays 5 star energy requirements to a very good (tight) budget, at a very reasonable cost at about the same time as the above building. The owners report similar levels of comfort & accomodation, well designed, well built equals comfort & value for longevity

Orientation & shading = Heat (sun) out in the summer & in during winter, results in efficient use of Radiation (free energy).

Well designed window & door placement in concert with more sympathetic heating & cooling systems  = efficient use of  Convection, (cheaper running costs)

Wise selection of materials & their placement = efficient management & distribution of Radiation & Convection results in less loss of energy through undesirable Conduction.

Thats enough of me preaching of the simple sermon, God bless, Inshalah, Shalom etc.

Cheers Dermot

Design Concept 3

15thfinal121

This is the Final image for this render.

I changed the colour of the trees in the back ground to blend better with the trees in the model,  these background trees are photos of the actual site taken from about the same place as the rendered image is viewed from.

I have added a sign to the entry & myself opening the door of the yellow VW. The dog got lost in the hurry to finalise it.

There are a few additional errors regarding graphic artistry to be addressed but as I have left this project I will not work on this image further.

Comments on this image would be greatly appreciated. Do not be concerned, you will not get spam or junk from me by submitting a comment below.

New Design Concept 2

7threnderpreswcanopyl_3

This new colour/material selection incorporates a new colour package by Resene paints.

They provide a great set of tools for the designer. Their colour books are available to import into Autocad for Architecture 2008. I have imported the 2007 range & used two colours, "Clockwork Orange" & "Wazzup". These colours are incorporated in the treatment around the windows at the facade of the parapet walled section of this model. Clockwork Orange is on the setback walls in the center & on either side of the windows. Wazzup is on the rendered shade projections framing the windows. The windows are set back from the facade with zincalume panels above & below them. the b/work should be a nice warm terracotta/clay brick with a flush joint finish.

So now this image is ready for colour painting with the colours from any of the Resene range, like I said great tool

Video of Mill Rd apartments in Bright

Download this file to see a video visualisation of the 3 apartments described in the previous article.

Download wmv4.wmv

The video is a windows media file & it runs a little fast on first play. If you go up to the menu at the top of the screen & click on play, then down to Play Speed which opens a flyout to allow you to change the speed to slow. Additionally if you hover over over the play button it becomes the pause button during the play mode. So you can pause the video at any time & click play to continue again.

3 Apartments at No 1 Mill Rd, Bright

We have acquired a piece of land in the township of Bright, Victoria 3741. It is approximately 200 meters from where the old General Post Office resided until a couple of years ago. As distances between towns in Australia are from GPO to GPO one could regard this address  as being 200m from the town center of Australia,s most picturesque alpine towns. No question about the last part of that sentence!

Upon first glance of the land it is difficult (for some) to see the extent & potential for its development but when it came up for sale a couple of years ago I did a little bit of investigating with Dickens Real Estate in Bright & found that this site has some quite  exciting possibilities. The land is 1110 sq m. Although much of it (25%) is steep, there is a requirement within the Victorian Res Code town planning guidelines to allow for a reasonable amount of permeable land on any development site so it might as well be steep. The land fronts onto a parkland that will not get developed & in fact the Alpine Shire are at the moment upgrading the area around Bakers Gully Creek which is part of the route from No 1 Mill Rd to the main shopping center of the village.

In this post I have created & shown a set of visualizations for one possibility for this site. The set of 3 apartments described here have not been put to the Alpine Shire Planning department yet. But the major part of the planning issues have been looked at & they will comply with the Victorian Res Code guideline's.

The buildings modeled here have upstairs kitchen & bedrooms with the opportunity to fit a residential class lift in place of the spiral stairwell. These buildings are also configured to allow a lift to be retro-fitted at a later date if need be. There is an additional provision for access to the 1st floor from the garden at the side of each apartment. This access is to a rear 1st floor verandah/patio which is roofed but not enclosed to allow for daylight & airflow to permeate through from the front to the rear of the building.

Whereas this is one possible configuration for this block of land, it is by no means the only possibility.
